Email Address: jrrrr@mywdo.com I don't believe I was every at Schneeberg when the snow wasn't as deep at the buildings. I was there for a month at a time between 1974 and 1976. I have great memories with D.B. Atkins, Creig Peterson, and many others. We spent many evenings downtown at the disco, and even more cold nights on the mountain. I am sad to see the photos of the destruction of the building.

Thanks for keeping this site alive.
I served in the 326th from 82 - 84 as a 98GRU. We deployed to Schneeberg often.
I remember Kevin Farmer, Charles Bogino, Stretch Morgan, Mark Kotanchik and others whose names I can't recall at the moment.

Do you know what ever happened to Robert Smith's "My Schneeberg Page"? He had some great photos posted.

keep up the good work.

Email Address: WGolden@IntelligenceCareers.com I was a constant participant in Schneeberg activities from '77-79 (307th ASA), 81-83 (326th ASA) as a 98GCXGMK3, and was the Detachment Sergeant there from October 1983-February 1985, with Lt. John Parker as the OIC. Left in February 1985 to go Warrant. Lots of fun. Am still in contact with many Schneebergers from this time. Would love to hear from Charlie Bogino, Ty Pinney, and Guenther Weiss (the German Sergeant Major from the tower next door) ... and anyone else, too.

Life is kind in that I am able to visit Schneeberg every few years. Was just there in March 2008 and will be visiting again this March -- would love to do the reunion in April but ... it's soccer season back here in Virginia.

Best regards.

Email Address: blindkev@aol.com I hit Augsburg in January of 1981 fresh out of DLI/San Angelo/Ft. Devons training. We would occasionally deploy to Schneeberg for training and drive our equipment from Augsburg to the hill. It was always fun hitting the autobahn in the 2 ½ ton trucks with the “hut” on the back and see how fast we could go (especially on the way home from Schneeberg). But don’t forget to release the parking brake after a rest stop or the cab will fill up with those nasty brake-burning fumes. After I reenlisted in 1983, they asked me where I wanted to go and I said Schneeberg. I ended up there for several years as part of the cadre along with Mark Kotanchik (NCOIC), Robert Smith (OPS NCOIC), Richard Marsh (Commo NCOIC), Ty Pinney (NCOIC of the small MP section), and Harry Morgan (Head Cook) . Some of other permanent members I remember are Charles Bogino (98GRU), Jeff Settles (98C), Stretch Morgan (98GCZ), Ken Perriman (98GRU), Abe Hernandez (71L - admin), James “Mac” McIntosh (76Y - supply), Gregory(?) Hughes (commo), Deborah Brown (05H - morse), Brian Flinn (05K – signals), Debbie Andersen (98GRU). Jeff(?) Loneman (95B – MP).

Email Address: c-klein@gmx.de Hello,

my father was one of the German soldiers stationed at the Schneeberg. He was there in the 70s. One of the American soldiers (?? not quite sure whether a soldier, as I recall, there were other Americans there as well?) was Micheal "Mike" Ketchmark, Uncle Mike he was to my sister and me. Unfortunately my Dad lost contacr. All I know is that Uncle Mike was married to a German woman and that they have left Germany in the 80s and went back to the US. Other names I remember from Dad's stories is Guenther Weiße, Werner Huege and Peter Finzel.

If anyone could help me or if anyone knows something about the whereabouts of Uncle Mike, I really would appreciate a short message!

Thanks!

Carolin

Assigned to the Commo Plt (they didn't know what an 05D was!), I supported opeerations on Schneeberg in October, 1974, and was able to be one of very few vehicles to escape a major storm in mid-October to hightail it back to Augsburg. Left the Army in July, 76 and returned in January, 77, but the ASA considered me 'tainted goods' (prior service scum), so I went into Interogation and had a great career, retiring in October, 1993. It does make you feel like they have torn something from your past.

I was a detachment leader for two trips to Mt. Hoherbogen in 61 when we were lucky enough to have no officers assigned to our group. Could there be anything better?

Email Address: james@milstid.com So many memories! I lived in Schoeningen from Mar '67 through Aug '69 at the Bahnhof Hotel, the Park Hotel, and later in an apartment. There were two apartments that several of us shared... Joe Gerichs, Marsden Burger, Alex Darnell, Dave Larsen, and a couple others that I just can't remember their names... CRS syndrome!

I remember Jamie "Skid" Marks convinced me to buy a bass guitar so he, Dave Buford, and I could start a country western band... I wasn't a big fan of CW, but it was easy to play and we had a ball. Played several times in the Swing Club, at the Helmstedt EM club, and a couple gasthauses in Braunschweig. I still have my "Beatle Bass"... it's worth LOTS of money now! I paid 312DM, about $78, for it and still have the reciept!

And I remember us teaching Amos at "Eis Amos" how to make hamburgers... he made a fortune selling ice cream, hamburgers, and pommes frites to all the Det K guys. And the daily chow runs into town for brotchen, meat, and cheese. We regularly ate at the Ratskeller and the food was great... I miss it!

I have a family/friends website at http://www.milstid.com - feel free to visit and peruse the photo albums!

I hope this works this time. I spent 20 minutes composing a message, only to submit and have it tell me it didn't accept it; something about needing numbers in my occupation! Oh well, I'll try again, but shorter this time.

This was an amazing blast from my past. I was stationed at the 326th in Augsburg, and spent about 10 months or so at Schneeberg around 1981 or so. I didn't live in Bischofsgruen, but in the first little dorf to the right after coming off the mountain.

This brought back lots of memories (and some things I can't remember). Some names I remember (Hi Sue! Are you still in touch with Brandy? If not, let me know; I have her current e-mail addy; she lives in Denver). What was the name of that disco in, hmmm, was it Wunsiedel? Sloopy's? Remember "Another One Bites the Dust" line dancing? What about our Deutscher Frauleins (we wished!) Doggie, Sigi, the two sister, Anna and....

We'll see if this message works.

I am trying to locate one of our own. Does anyone remember the Home of Record or have any contact information for George Cox? He was one of our MP's. To see a photo of George to jog your memory do the following:
In the catagory "Almost Everything Schneeberg 50's-90's" select '60's, then "Ken Pelfrey's Scrapbook", then "At The Club" and look at kenonfloor2. That's George on the left. You might also go from "Ken Pelfrey's Scrapbook" to "Doug Yarns Bolle' Party at the Club" and checkout atthebar1. Once again that's George on the left. George was quite a character so it's hard to say where he wound up. Zip me an e-mail if you have any input on what became of George.
To Phil Ward, hope you enjoy your upcoming vacation to Germany man. Take lot's of photos so you can post some for us.
The Crazy Cajun Dr. Doug is flying in for a visit next week. Should be fun.
Take care all

I'm a little late in notifying people on my "Schneeberg List" about the reunion this year, but then the regulars know that the annual event in Bischofsgruen is like Christmas, Thanksgiving and Halloween -- it always takes place at the same time, namely "EASTER SATURDAY".

This year the date is SATURDAY 10 APRIL 2004

The agenda is the same as always:

10 a.m. - Hikers meet in front of the church (Marktplatz) for the pilgrimage to the top of the hill. Don't miss the hike -- it's the best part of the reunion!!!

1 p.m. - Hikers return to Bischofsgruen and get together with the "Kaffee & Kuchen" crowd in the Gasthof zum Deutschen Adler for an afternoon of Bosniaks, beer and storytelling.

You don't have to be a "Schneeberger" to attend. Anyone who has ever heard of Schneeberg is very welcome!!!

I noted many mentions of working during the Russian invasion of 1968. I was working in the comm center at NSA Ft Meade on the date of the invasion. We had a Navy guy from Texas on the shift and he liked to brag about his state. After transmitting the flash traffic on the invasion, we changed the invasion site to Texas. We thought it was funny but the next shift found the message and thought it had been transmitted to the usual parties. The next day we were informed that our sense of humor did not match NSA's. Who would have thought that they even had one.

Email Address: rsmkc@everestkc.net I was told about this site by Dave Heller, who I stumbled across while looking for some history about the ASA Czech mission. I have also seen the Det K site. I was amazed that these sites exist! Ain't technology great? Many thanks for maintaining them. Reading some of the postings brings back a lot of memories of my times at Det J and Det K. I was at Det K when the Warsaw Pact invaded Czechoslovakia. I remember working 43 days straight with no break greater than 24 hours. I was at Det K with Frank Hogan, Dave Roberts, Tom Winham, Gordon Keith, Tim Newman, Dennis Walker, Bill Warwick, Eppes, Raspberry, Mike Daugherty, Dave Heller, George Kent, and a bunch of other people whose names I can't recall right now. I was at Det J with John Kelliher, Wally Price, Fred Haack, Pichka, Joe Deegan, Riggs, Hal Smith when he ran the EM club, Latour, Rich Hill, Myron Johnson, French, Boy, Woody, Harris, and many others whose faces I can recall but not the names.

Heck, I have found guys pictures that I have known only by e-mail and now I have a face to put with it. It's also nice to be able to communicate with people who came before and after you and see how things and people turned out. Thanks again.

Email Address: nexus_marine@earthlink.net Read the archived guestbook entries. Hi to Whiskyman. I was briefly in the Herzo TR shop with Grunvald, but spent most of my time at Det J and K. I was in that group with Sandoval and Lapekas. Also Frank Hogan, Peter Ninos, Ernie Schlintz, Bill Tilton, and the Beaver (can't remember his real name).

Too bad so many of us didn't realize that the Army was just a minor annoyance, and we were actually living in paradise. I'll have to email William Penn Tilton III. Remember all the word games on mids?

Email Address: SEAZBILL@prodigy.net What a great site. I was one of the first females they didn't send to FSA. I was greeted by JC Cummings who was not to happy to have women in the field. I remember some of the names esp Lou McCarty. We put the old TSQ99 back togethter, then my tour was involuntarily extended because NSA decided they actually wanted to use it and I was the only op that new how it worked...HI HO...actually I got lucky because I misssed my assignment to Ft Hood and went to San Antonio instead. I get a kick out of the new show CIA because they're so stiff and serious...I remember Ben Gibbs(05K) favorite line "10,000 unemployed comedians and they're all in the ASA." I have some photos I'll submit as soon as I get my scanner working again.

Email Address: bobdmac@attbi.com Thanks, Phil Ward, for telling me about this site. I was purged from Wobeck to Mauth (Anybody remember Bob Eubanks? ) shortly after the invasion, and from there to Schneeberg. Lived with Kinobärbel (above the Kino) in Bischofsgrün. I remember bombing up that long hill in the winter in my old Porsche. The note about the Gasthaus on Ochsenkopf reminded me of the ski lessons I took there and how many times I fell the first time I went down that slope. I started hanging out with some Germans at the Dolomiten Cafe in Wunsiedel and married a girl from there. After 6 months in the States, she went back home to stay. Funny how certain words stick in your memory without your even realizing it. I had completely forgotten about the Chopper.

Email Address: harryjs@juno.com Hi Vets - I had to write something in your guestbook. As you may notice, my family name is Schneeberg and I went through Ft Devins training back in early sixties after basic in Fort Dix. Spent most of my time up and down the east coast as I started out as a reservist and got activated during the Berlin Crisis. Ended up spending 2 years anyway. Sorry I wasn't shipped to Germany to do a tour in Schneeberg. That would have been a laugh getting papers sending Schneeberg to Schneeberg.

Well nice to visit your web site. If anyone knows anyone from the 197th USASA - drop me a line. Best regards.

Email Address: johnnypros@comcast.net The older I get, the better my time in the Army gets. Some sort of reverse process. I can't complain, though. I spent four years in the Army and all my overseas duty was in Germany. Great although limited TDY at the remote sites. Had to keep my 98J skills honed. No one was shooting at me when so many of our brave compatriots were serving in Vietnam.
